The university's forerunner, Napier Technical College, came into existence in 1964 and was given to John Napier's name, a Scottish mathematician and philosopher who lived in the sixteenth century. In 1992, Lord Douglas-Hamilton began Napier University, a technical college that had previously been a university. The institution changed its name to Edinburgh Napier University UK in 2009.
