Originally the Grande Prairie Junior College, the Grande Prairie Regional College was established in 1966. In addition to starting its first classes in 1974, the college inaugurated a new phase in 1991. With discussions starting in 2018, the college officially received polytechnic status in 2021, becoming the Northwestern Polytechnic.
