How do International Students rate their Learning Experience in Australia?

International student feedback, reviews, and ratings might come in handy when comparing and weighing out your study abroad options. To help out prospective international – and even domestic - students with a complete analytical overview of the quality of post-secondary education in Australia, the Student Experience Survey (SES) publishes annual statistics, which serve as a comprehensive summary of how students feel about their study experience at Australian universities. The recently released data of 2020 was also issued by SES via the Australian Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) website. The survey outcomes have been assorted by demographics that let us know how university experience is rated by different groups.

The 2020 tables of SES categorically indicates the academic experiences of international students at Australian higher education institutes and other education providers. The survey results are the clear depiction of the ratio of international students, who rate their educational experience positively, as well as the upsides and downsides of instruction in different areas of the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum. The official SES report is a 78-page long document that holds too much numerical data, and might be too painful for the eyes to understand and analyze. So, we have assimilated the evaluations down to your ease to give you a quick insight into how positively (in percentage) international students have rated their experience at these levels of higher study.

International Student Ratings on Undergraduate Level of Study

According to the tables, less than two-third (63 percent) of the international students living in Australia, rated their undergraduate study experience positively. Although rated positively by more than half of the students, it is observed that overall international student experience ratings have significantly declined since 2019 ($12%). Also, international student rating was comparatively less in contrast to the domestic student experience, who gave an aggregate rating of 80 percent for their undergraduate study experience. However, in most areas, foreign student do signify a satisfactory performance of institutes at the undergraduate level:

  • 76 percent assessed Skills Development positively
  • 49 percent rated Learner Engagement positively
  • 71 percent evaluated Teaching Quality positively
  • 72 percent valued Learning Resources positively

International Student Ratings on Postgraduate Level of Study

The SES report has posed a cumulative rating for postgraduate student experience, including both the domestic and international student ratings. Although these results show a similar trend to that of the undergraduate ratings, Postgraduate students seem to have enjoyed a more positive experience in most aspects of their studies than undergraduate students:

  • 78 percent rated Skills Development positively
  • 42 percent looked at Learner Engagement positively
  • 74 percent assessed Student Support positively
  • 73 percent evaluated Learning Resources positively.
