Originally the Lakehead Technical Institute, Lakehead University is a public research university established in June 1946. Starting its first class in 1948, Lakehead Technical Institute became a college in 1957. In 1965 the college became known as Lakehead University through a royal assent. With two campuses in the Ontario province, the university educates over 10,000 students on its grounds in Ontario, Canada. The university also has rural and suburban campuses.

Impact Rankings Index for 2023 also classifies the university among the best #101-200 Canadian higher education institutes. US News and Report Index ranks Lakehead #1291 among all universities worldwide. Nationally, US News ranks the university #30 among all Canadian global universities. CWUR classifies the institute as #1280 among all universities globally and ranks it #32 among all Canadian universities.

Accepting admissions from Canada and internationally, the university has an acceptance rate of 82%, according to the Kanan International website, making it a slightly selective institute. Lakehead University International Students must meet program-specific Lakehead University requirements for International Students to secure admission, all available on their website. The university also welcomes transfer students. All students must fill out the application with a set Lakehead University application fee. Lakehead University Location

1.1)    Lakehead University Thunder Bay

Opened in 1957, the main campus houses residence buildings and academic centers.

1.2)    Lakehead University Orillia Campus

Opened in 2006, this campus is in the development of becoming Canada's first LEED. The campus offers 17 undergraduate programs and provides ample community engagement.
