Originally the Toronto Baptist College, McMaster University was established in 1887 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. With its roots going back to the 1830s, the university takes its name in honor of William McMaster, who pitched in a handsome amount for the institution's foundation. Additionally, the Baptist College amalgamated with another college in 1887, founding McMaster. It awarded its first degrees in 1894.
