Founded in 1873 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, the university started as an educational institution for women when they could not vote. In 1914 the institute started offering two-year bachelor-level degrees in association with Dalhousie University. Finally, in 1925, Mount Saint Vincent University was authorized to award its degrees. Moreover, the college went on to offer education in Arts, Science, Music, Home Economics, Nursing, and Education. In 1966, MSVU officially took the name as a university. Furthermore, accommodating over 4,000 students on its campuses, the university offers degree programs and other non-conventional courses.
