One hundred seventy-six years ago, in 1845, the National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway) was founded under the "Queen's College Galway." The university started to operate after four years, initially with 68 students. It underwent many name changes before settling to its current name in 1997 under the Universities Act.

The NUI Galway is one of the best universities in Ireland for international students. It has 16 schools and 4 colleges and more than 17,000 students studying at its one campus in Galway, Ireland.
