Initially the College of Bytown, the University of Ottawa was established in 1848 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Originally in Lower Town, the university shifted campuses to Sandy Hill in 1856 due to accommodation issues. Moreover, in 1861, the college officially became the University of Ottawa following the city's name change. By the mid-1870s, Ottawa was giving out undergraduate degrees. In addition, the university started enrolling women in 1919, after campus reconstruction because of a fire.
