Originally the Assumption College, the University of Windsor was established in 1857. At the beginning of the 20th century, the college became associated with the University of Western Ontario. Moreover, in the mid-1900s, the college started admitting women students. Furthermore, in 1956, the college attained university-level status and became the Assumption University of Windsor. In addition, it inaugurated new academic faculties and opened buildings. In 1963, the university was officially renamed the Windsor University.
