Eligibility criteria
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements: Be a citizen of a country that maintains diplomatic relations with Japan Be under 35 years old as of April 1, 2026 Hold or be completing a master’s degree or equivalent qualification by September 2026 Maintain a strong academic record with a minimum GPA of 2.30 out of 3.0 Demonstrate strong ability to read, write, and communicate in English Be in good physical and mental health for advanced academic study Be available to arrive in Japan between late September and early October 2026 Be willing to participate in an academic interview with a prospective supervisor before nomination Applicants who are currently receiving another scholarship, have recently held a Japanese government scholarship, or cannot meet the arrival timeline are not eligible for this round.
