IELTS Score Required for UK, Australia, Canada Universities (Course-Level Breakdown)
IELTS scores required for UK, Australian, and Canadian universities: a course-level breakdown, per-module minimums, PTE acceptance, and fees for Pakistani students.
Team TCF
If you are a Pakistani student planning to study in the UK, Australia, or Canada, even a small difference in your IELTS score can matter. Requirements vary by country, university, and course level, and it gets confusing when you also compare PTE, Duolingo, and other tests.
This guide gives you a clear map to the IELTS score required for UK universities, Australian student visas, and Canadian colleges and universities. You will see how many bands you need for bachelor's versus master's, what the typical IELTS requirements for a master's in the UK look like, how the minimum IELTS for an Australian student visa works, and where IELTS versus PTE for Canada fits into your decision. If a test still feels like the wrong hurdle for you, it is also worth checking which destinations let you study abroad without IELTS.
The short version: the band you need depends on the country and the course level, and one weak module can undo an otherwise fine overall score. Here is how it actually works, and what to do if your Writing or Speaking lags behind.
How IELTS Scores Map to University and Visa Requirements
You have probably heard two different numbers: one from the university, one about the visa. Both can be right, because they are separate checks.
Meeting the minimum band does not guarantee admission or a visa. Universities and immigration authorities set their own requirements, so for a Pakistani student it is one test but two checkpoints: first the university at the admission stage, then the visa officer later. Check both before you apply, not just the one in front of you.

Why Universities Look Beyond the Overall Band
A university is really asking one thing: can you cope with lectures, discussions, and written assignments in English from day one? A balanced set of scores answers that better than a high average built on one strong skill and one weak one.
Overall Band vs Per-Module Minimums
The overall band is the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking scores. But many universities do not rely on the overall band alone; they also set a minimum for each module. You can hit an overall 6.5 and still miss admission if one module falls below the threshold.

IELTS Scores Required for UK Universities (by Level)
For UK universities, think of IELTS bands in three floors: one for foundation and college level, one for standard bachelor's degrees, and one for master's or professional courses. Most universities set their own exact numbers, but many follow a similar pattern:
- Foundation, pathway, and pre-sessional courses often accept around IELTS 5.0-5.5 overall, with no band below about 4.5-5.0, because the course itself adds English support.
- Undergraduate (bachelor's) degrees usually ask for about 6.0 overall, with no band below 5.5. More competitive courses may want 6.5 overall.
- Postgraduate (master's) degrees commonly target 6.5 overall, with no band below 6.0. Very competitive or language-heavy courses such as Law, Journalism, and Medicine can reach 7.0 overall, with higher minimums in Writing and Speaking.
So, as a rough target: aim for at least 6.0 if you are looking at regular bachelor's programs, and at least 6.5 if a UK master's is the goal. To shortlist courses by a band you can realistically hit, use TCF as your university search and comparison platform, or start with the UK study guide.
UKVI vs Academic IELTS
Many Pakistani students get confused by the two IELTS options: IELTS Academic and IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The test format, scoring, and difficulty are essentially the same; the purpose differs.

When Should You Take IELTS Academic?
Take IELTS Academic if you are applying to universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, or elsewhere, you only need to meet the university English requirement, and your institution or visa route does not specifically require UKVI.
When Should You Take IELTS UKVI?
Take IELTS UKVI when your university or pathway provider specifically asks for it, you are applying for certain UK visa categories, or you are enrolling in a foundation, pre-sessional English, or pathway program that requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT).
Do Universities Prefer UKVI Over Academic IELTS?
In most cases universities do not prefer one over the other for admission. If a university accepts IELTS, it accepts both Academic and UKVI. The real question is whether your visa route requires a UKVI-approved test.
IELTS Scores Required for Australian Universities and the Subclass 500
For Australia, always think in two layers: university entry and the Subclass 500 student visa. See the wider picture in the Australia study guide.
- Foundation, pathway, and vocational courses often start around IELTS 5.5 overall, especially if you also do an English-language (ELICOS) course first.
- Undergraduate degrees usually require about 6.0 overall, with no band below 5.5 in many cases.
- Postgraduate degrees often require around 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each band; competitive courses such as Nursing, Teaching, and Law may require 7.0 or higher.
For the Subclass 500 student visa, recent updates made the rules stricter: you normally need at least IELTS 6.0 overall, and very often no band below 5.5. With a packaged English-plus-degree offer (ELICOS plus main course) you might start with a slightly lower score, such as 5.5, then meet the higher band before the main course begins. Confirm the current visa threshold on the Department of Home Affairs page, as it changes.
IELTS Scores Required for Canadian Universities and Study Permits
Canada is still a top pick for Pakistani students, largely for the work options after you graduate. See the Canada study guide for the full picture.

What Happened to SDS?
You may still see the Student Direct Stream (SDS) mentioned online, but Canada discontinued SDS on 8 November 2024, and Pakistan was one of the SDS countries. It no longer exists. For reference, SDS previously expected the following:

The Current Situation
All Pakistani applicants now apply through the regular study permit stream. The study permit itself does not set a single fixed IELTS score, but you still need IELTS (or another accepted test) for university admission, and a strong score supports your application. In practice, Canadian colleges and universities kept English expectations similar to before, so the targets below are still the ones to aim for.

Where to Take IELTS in Pakistan (and What It Costs)
IELTS in Pakistan is delivered by the British Council, IDP, and AEO, with test centres in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, and others. As of 2026, standard IELTS is computer-delivered only (the paper format was discontinued in March 2026), and results usually arrive within three to five business days.
As of early 2026, typical fees are: IELTS on Computer (Academic or General Training) about PKR 71,320 to 71,920 depending on your city; IELTS for UKVI about PKR 72,000; and IELTS Life Skills about PKR 50,000 in selected cities. Fees change at least yearly and vary slightly by city, so confirm the current price and dates on the British Council Pakistan or IDP Pakistan website before you pay, and book only through official channels.
Two practical tips for booking in Pakistan. First, if the UK is your target and your route needs a Secure English Language Test, book the IELTS for UKVI option, not the standard Academic test, or you will pay again. Second, pay by bank transfer (IBFT) or 1Bill rather than a credit or debit card: card payments to the British Council and IDP are treated as international transactions, so they attract advance tax and bank charges that can add several thousand rupees on top of the fee. And if you miss your target in only one module, the One Skill Retake (about PKR 45,300) lets you re-sit just that skill on computer instead of the whole test. When you are ready to plan, book an IELTS prep consultation.

Important Note
These scores show general admission trends across the UK, Australia, and Canada. Individual institutions may set higher or lower requirements depending on the course, ranking, and accreditation. Always verify the latest IELTS requirement on your chosen university admissions page before applying. If you want to stop guessing and see where your English stands, take a free IELTS practice test through TCF and get a realistic band estimate for each module, then book an IELTS prep consultation to review your weak areas, choose the right test date, and match your target band to real courses instead of studying blindly.
IELTS vs PTE Acceptance by Country
When students in Pakistan compare IELTS versus PTE for Canada, the UK, and Australia, they mainly care about three things: admission, visas, and how widely each test is accepted. For a deeper comparison of the tests themselves, see the IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL guide.
United Kingdom
- IELTS (especially Academic and IELTS for UKVI Academic) is the default test and is accepted almost everywhere for universities and student visas.
- PTE Academic is also widely accepted by many UK universities and approved for certain visa routes, but check both the university list and the UK visa rules for your exact case.
- Safest choice if unsure: IELTS UKVI Academic, because it usually covers admission and visa in one go.
Australia
- Universities and colleges strongly accept both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic.
- For the Subclass 500 student visa, the government accepts several tests, including IELTS and PTE Academic, as long as they meet the minimum score and come from approved test versions.
- If you prefer computer-based testing and fast results, PTE can be attractive; if you want the most widely recognised option, IELTS remains the default.
Canada
- For universities and colleges, both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are accepted by many institutions, but each one sets its own list, so check the specific website.
- For study permits, your English test result supports your application. IELTS is the most established option; PTE Academic is increasingly recognised, so confirm your chosen institution and stream accept it at the time you apply.
- With SDS gone, treat IELTS as the safe baseline and consider PTE once you have confirmed it is accepted for both admission and your application.
So which one? If you want to keep all three countries open, IELTS Academic (and IELTS UKVI Academic for the UK) is the safest single test to sit. If you have already settled on one country and you are more comfortable typing than sitting across from an examiner, PTE Academic is a strong alternative, as long as both the university and the visa authority on your list accept it.
What to Do If You Fall Short of the Required Band
Missing your target by 0.5 in one module is very common, especially for Pakistani students. Do not panic; choose the smartest next move based on how far you are from the requirement.
If you missed by just 0.5 in one skill (for example, overall 6.5 but Writing 5.5 when you needed 6.0):
- In Pakistan you can use the One Skill Retake on computer-delivered IELTS (about PKR 45,300) to re-sit only the weak skill instead of the whole test.
- Check whether your university accepts an updated or combined score later.
- Do focused, targeted practice on that one skill, which for most students is Writing or Speaking, then update your score with the university as soon as the new result arrives.
If you are 1.0 band or more below the target:
- Consider a lower entry point (foundation, pathway, or a language-plus-academic package) instead of direct entry to a bachelor's or master's.
- Use a three to six month improvement window: join a serious IELTS class, write one essay a day, and record yourself speaking.
- Look at programs with slightly lower language entry points, or destinations where you can study abroad without IELTS, if your main goal is to get abroad first and build up.
Plenty of Pakistani students hit their band on the second or third attempt, usually once they stop guessing and get honest about which skill is dragging the score down. For a full study routine, see the IELTS preparation guide. When you are ready, take a free IELTS practice test through TCF and turn the results into a focused, country-specific plan.
